A love of reading and stories starts early. We know that children whose parents read to them early and often are most likely to be successful in life. Did you know that the number of books in a home also plays a key role? To promote literacy and love of books, we hold several book fairs each year, read in class daily, focus on an Author of the Month and hold an annual Storybook Character Parade.
For the parade families are urged to ask their child about their favorite book and character and then try to develop a costume around that character. "Homemade costumes are the best because the child has more of a say in what the outcome is", says Director Jolene Tollett. MOLO encourages imagination, encouraging real books instead of movies or tv characters. "Would I rather see a child choose to be a Disney princess or Rosie Revere Engineer? Rosie hands down every time", says Tollett. "I want every child to be an active participant and problem solver in their lives."
Though the parade had to be moved to the gym due to rain, it was still a great event.
